Podcast Obsessed

My favorite form of media - podcasts. I love podcasts. I listen to them in my car, when I'm walking, when I'm baking, when I'm cleaning my room. They are a really great way to unwind in a mindful, and somewhat academic manner. I do not enjoy watching TV, and podcasts are a great way to not only self educate, but to relax. Here are my top podcast recommendations.

Serial 
Hosted by Sarah Koenig, this is an investigative journalism podcast produced by this American Life. This is literally the most exciting way a person can spend their time. Listening to a nonfiction story over multiple episodes?? I think yes. There are two seasons. The first follows a murder case, and the second an army 'desertion' case. 

 Revisionist History
This is a podcast by Malcolm Gladwell. Malcolm Gladwell is god-like, and in this podcast he re-examines an event in history, that is told in an inaccurate or misinformed manner, and "corrects it." Listening to this podcast makes me feel smarter and is a great way to inform oneself. 

 Dissect
For all music lovers! This is a podcast that examines different albums in super in-depth manner. In 2018 it was at the top of the "New York Times Best Podcast List," and definitely for a reason. 

 Views
This is definitely the least intellectual podcast of the group, and is definitely more on the comedy side of things. David Dobrik hosts this podcast, and it's a story-telling type podcast. It makes me laugh and I can zone out to it after a long day. It doesn't require my full attention, whereas Podcasts like Serial and Revisionist History do.

I don't watch TV

I don't watch TV. I tell people this quite a lot and they often repeat it back to me, confused. "But, like...you still watch Netflix right? Hulu?" In middle school I watched excessive amounts of television. Lost, Shameless, American Horror Story... I watched so much television, in fact, that I decided I would not waste one more second of my life doing so. Every now and again I'll watch something with a friend, so in the past year I have probably seen 4 total hours of TV. It is very interesting to see the impact this has had on my life. In Critical Thinking Class, people will talk of ads, and I have no idea what they're talking about. Making the descion to stop watching TV has allowed me relax in ways that do not involve a screen. Although I have no evidence of this, it feels healtheir to unwind by reading or listening to music than watching TV. Violence in the Media

How does our reality become distorted by media? The constant presence of violence can quickly desensitize an individual or community. Turn on the TV, and violence is there. Play a video game where the goal is to kill as many people as possible. In music, on social media, and in movies, gore and violence are often presented to the viewer. My parents, who did not grow up with the internet, are deeply disturbed by gory horror movies and TV shows, that my brother and I have been comfortable watching since elementary school. Although this may simply be a matter of preference, the increased consumption of media between generations can't be ignored. I can't help but wonder if my enjoyment of horror movies has been influenced by the violence I have been seeing on the internet for years. Am I a midriff?

After watching Frontline, Making Cents out of Teens: The Merchants of cool, I had to wonder - Am I a midriff? A midriff is a generic teen girl, whose life centered around shopping and looking pretty. They constantly seemed like they were selling something to somebody; so many parts of themselves had been developed to appease others. They act older than they are, and their behavior is centered around sexuality, narcissism, and complete lack of brains. Shallowness is not only being standardized - but celebrated. In all honesty, I do not think I am a complete midriff, but I do question how much of myself has been influenced by this archetype. I greatly value surface appearances - what people wear, how they look, how they speak. Do I overly value this? I cannot deny that looks play a very large part, if not the greatest part, in "society's"perception of the individual.
